Why balance is essential to basketball defending

It would be best if you had a balance when playing basketball in the UAE or worldwide. Players who lack proper credit tend to be quickly forced into poor shots or easily moved out of the way for someone who is shooting. As such, you need to become comfortable with adjusting your balance to help make sure that your opponent can only hit the smallest percentage shot you can give them.

Balance is a key to good basketball offence, but it’s an essential attribute for modern basketball players. Therefore, you should spend as much time as possible working on your balance. Instead of shooting 3s, spend the day working one-on-one with a good dribbler who contorts you and moves you around the court!

You will find that your game goes through the roof because you are defending with such intensity. You get used to moving your weight from left to right, front to back, without adjusting yourself. As a player, if you commit too much in any direction, you can quickly lose balance and get knocked aside or lose the player due to lack of balance.

Balance is your most powerful tool when becoming a proper basketball star. You must try and stay balanced because it means that you can accurately react to your attacker’s movements. If you commit too much, all it takes is one hesitation dribble or a fake pass/shot to leave you on the floor while they parade to the basket.

The most powerful thing an attacker can do is force you to lose your balance. The sooner you understand that, the easier it is to counter the issue.

How do I improve my balance?

First off, work with your basketball coach to build a few things. You must set up one-to-one sessions with a good, natural dribbler and shooter. This should force you to stick them like glue as they move around in all directions. You are forced to quickly learn to adjust your balance because otherwise, you will get blown off and put on the floor!

Also, you want to work on a physical exercise that can strengthen your hips, ankles, and core. You need to quickly move those hips without losing balance and shift weight in one direction without over-committing needlessly.

At the same time, you should work on getting the correct physical balance. You can more easily lose balance if you have too much upper body power but not enough power in the legs. The moment you lose balance is the moment your team is sure to concede.

So, get used to ensure you can stay in balance – it’s better to keep on point and force a more challenging shot than it is to over-commit, lose balance, and get done regardless.

As a defender, balance is your most important skill – get used to mastering your balance, and you can see a massive change in how your game develops.
