How can you improve as a basketball player? Easy: Focus on your weak points
When you watch basketball, you might hear people refer to the sport as a ‘strong link’ sport – this means that it’s a game built on the best player. Unlike other sports, like football/soccer, a basketball team can go as far as their best player allows. It’s a sport that allows an individual to take over and to run the game themselves. However, when you hear this, it becomes easy to simply defer to the star of your team and act as a facilitator to them. But what about you? How do you improve as a player?
The easiest way to grow as a basketball player is pretty simple – focus on your weaknesses.
Many players lose their chance of making it because they spend too long honing their strengths. This means that you become a player who is a skilled expert at one or two attributes but lack everything else you need. The best players, though, are all-rounders who can also have a clear skill that is their primary skill. Instead of being an S-tier shooter but an F-tier dribbler or defender, it’s better to be an A-tier at your best skill, and a B to C-tier player at everything else.
How do improve my weaknesses as a basketball player?
The easiest way to become a better basketballer is to work on your weaknesses with a coach. After all, they are a weakness for a reason; you don’t know how to do it any better!
Therefore, a coach can show you both where you are going wrong, and what has to adjust to make it right. It could be body shape, posture, or even your form when using the ball. It does not matter – a coach is essential to show you what the problem is. Then, you can work as a duo to come up with an effective solution that will make you a better player as time goes on.
Keep all of this in mind and you can find it that bit easier to start working as a proper basketball player. The more time you spend dealing with your weaknesses, the better you will become. You can already do the things you do well; spending time practising on weaknesses won’t dilute your qualities elsewhere.
With that in mind, you should spend more time looking to work with a basketball coach at the UA. The more time that you spend engaging with a coach, the more time you can spend learning how to improve and grow. They can give you the solution to your problems, and then you simply put that into your day-to-day training regimes.
The days of being a one-skill specialist are gone; to play basketball for a living, or even for fun, you need to have more than one trick up your sleeve. By working with a coach, you can develop those skills in shorter times than you might think.
Don’t settle for being a one-trick pony; work with a coach, and you can become a better basketball player and have more fun along the way.
